Description

Arnold Schoenberg  (1874 – 1951) – Brettl Lieder  – ‘Cabaret Songs’ 1901

For those brought up on the Schoenberg of Pierrot lunaire and Erwartung  it can be difficult to reconcile that he is also the author of the eight highly entertaining and stylistically suave lied collectively known as the Brettl Lieder.  Written at the same time as Verklärte Nacht, the Cabaret Songs of Schoenberg serve as cultural time capsule of Vienna’s cabaret movement circa 1901. This is the composer’s most accessible music.  They abound with humour of every shade and well depict the legendary polarities of Viennese society at the beginning of the 20th century.

Contents:

1. Galathea (Frank Wedekind)

2. Gigerlette (Otto Julius Bierbaum)

5. Mahnung (Gustav Hochstetter)

6. Jedem das Seine (Colly, Firstname is unknown)

7. Langsamer Walzer   – Aus dem »Spiegel von Arcadia« von Emanuel Schikaneder

The Song Der Nachwandler is not contained in this publication; it was the only one of the set that Schoenberg scored for a small ensemble and for this reason is rarely coupled with the set scored for voice and piano.
