Reynaldo Hahn  – Melodies Volume II

Social unrest in their native Venezuela was the precipitating factor that compelled the Hahn family to immigrate to Paris in 1877.  Reynaldo Hahn’s talent was evident almost immediately.  At the age of eight he was one of the youngest students to enter the Paris Conservatoire. At fourteen he had his first ‘hit’ with the song “Si mes vers avaient des ailes”.  This would be the beginning of a long and prolific career.  Though he composed music in every genre, it was his songs that ensured his popularity would continue long past his death in 1947.

This is music from the turn of the last century  yet to experience these evocative, visceral and penetrating works is to transcend time itself and momentarily be one with a bygone era. More than any other composer of the day , Reynaldo Hahn , and the songs he wrote for himself to sing in the cabaret, came to embody the culture and the  emotional sophistication of  the time we now refer to as ‘la belle epoche’.
